Marva Delores Collins (née Knight; August 31, 1936 – June 24, 2015) was an American educator who started Westside Preparatory School in the impoverished Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago in 1975.

Dismayed at the low levels of learning that she felt some students were experiencing in particular areas, Collins took $5,000 (a large sum of money at that time) from her own teacher's retirement fund and started a private school in the top floors of the brownstone in the West Garfield Park neighborhood where she lived in 1975.

The school she started was called Westside Preparatory School. Westside Prep became an educational and commercial success.[6] Collins created her low-cost private school specifically for the purpose of teaching low income black children whom Collins felt that the Chicago Public School System had labeled as being learning disabled.Collins said she had the data to prove that students were teachable and were able to overcome obstacles of learning via her teaching methods, which she said eliminated behavioral issues and allowed students to flourish.

On June 19, 1865...more than two years after the #EmancipationProclamation... slaves in #Galveston, #Texas became aware that their freedom had been granted. #Juneteenth marks this day and though it is not a federal holiday it is the oldest known celebration of this event.
Happy #FreedomDay!

It's JUNETEENTH DAY, June 19, or Freedom Day, a day for celebration. Morgan Freeman narrated a terrific documentary "Slavery and the Making of America", and is one of many famous Americans who traced his roots and studied his ancestors' history. His DNA analysis went back to Niger and the present day Congo-Angola region. June 19, 1865 was the day slavery was abolished in Texas, 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Why so slow, Texas? The last final slaves were finally freed after the Confederacy collapsed. By the way, some American slaves chose the name Freeman after becoming free, or took a name from their former owners.
Morgan is in conversation with beautiful French legend Catherine Deneuve in this photo. We are at the Bocelli concert in Verona, Italy, a wonderful experience. Morgan and Catherine both dressed in top Italian style. I can't remember what I wore. Sometimes I just want to document the people and action arround me.

Happy Juneteenth, Today is a very important holiday to Africa Americans but yet it’s poorly appreciated. Today, June 19th marks the end of slavery and should be respected and celebrated as much as the 4th July. ❤️❤️💯 #blackhistory #blackexcellence #blackheritage #juneteenth
