'Reflections', a very successful design by Frances Burke from c.1960. It occurs to us that with its theme of light on water from an overhead viewpoint and its dash-dot-dash mark-making that there may be a subtle influence of Piet Mondrian's early work as in the study of a dune from 1909 (image 3). This fine example of Reflections is from the @powerhousemuseum collection. We have also seen this design in black on white - it's stunning!

@deortours We are so excited about our first-ever Decor Tours Portugal adventure, Sept. 29- Oct 6! ••
We have a wonderful (if we do say so ourselves) itinerary planned that combines a mix of design history (those tiles!), studio visits, workshops, and curated tours, all with time to explore both Lisbon and Porto.
••
If you’ve never considered Portugal as a design destination—please do! There is a distinctly contemporary arts & design culture, fused with a true respect for traditional methods, skills, and materials. And fortunately for visitors, Portugal remains affordable, making excellent food & wine, along with great shopping, reasonable even given the Euro to dollar exchange. Plus, Portugal was named Europe's Leading Destination in the 2019 World Travel Awards, just announced earlier this month, and was the featured destination in the NYTimes travel section just yesterday!
••
Join us to explore the design history and design opportunities offered by a country that was once the most powerful in the world—and that through myriad circumstances managed to preserve a culture of artisanship valued throughout Europe. Restorations and renovations at Versailles and Fontainebleau, as well as other palaces and embassies throughout Europe, depend on the traditional expertise to be found throughout Portugal. And bonus: The country is home to 15 UNESCO heritage sites.
••
Add in that the thriving contemporary design scene and you literally have dozens of excellent reasons to join us this October.

Idea Original: Nathan Williams .

We’ve posted high resolution scans of our original copy of Dolmetsch Ornamental Treasure on our digital download site, sarabande.smugmug.com. Like our scans of The Grammar of Ornament, there are patterns from various historic periods and locations which you can use in your designs and digital collages. You can have photographic prints made from the site as well.

Appreciating this 1963 sketch for the interior compartment of an Autoline vehicle by pioneering female auto designer, Suzanne Vanderbilt. She was one of GM's 10 original Damsels of Design (as the group became known). If you haven't heard of this pioneering group of women, it would be worth your while to look them up. ⠀

Landmark Chair (1964) - Ward Bennett
@goodstuffmagazine
"Perhaps one of American designer Ward Bennett's most recognizable designs is the Landmark Chair, originally produced in 1964 by Brickel Associates, later acquired by Geiger. The iconic chair is emblematic of the New Yorker's design ideology, mixing structural, industrial elements, toned down with warmer features. Often, this resulted in rolled steel juxtaposed with upholstery, but in the Landmark Chair, this style morphed into an exposed wooden frame, fitted with concealed dowel joints. The result creates a light, versatile, mid-century version of an upholstered armchair. Bennett was adamant about reinterpreting ergonomic ideals to push the limits of comfort and, true to the designer's intention, the chair is available in two heights. The chair was reissued in the 1990s by Geiger with a cane back."

De Stijl my heart—it’s Gerrit Rietveld’s birthday! A founding member of the Dutch movement, Rietveld will always occupy a special place in my chair-obsessed heart. His Red and Blue chair of 1917 so perfectly embodies the philosophies of De Stijl, becoming a three-dimension version of Mondrian’s two-dimensional paintings. But as awesome and important as Red and Blue is, Rietveld didn’t let it define him, breaking with De Stijl in 1928 in search of a more functionalist approach. His Hopmi chair of 1932 (pictured) is an excellent example of this—designed for easy assembly, the chair can be taken apart and stored flat when not in use. Reitveld originally designed the chair for Hollandsche Patent Metaal Industrie (HOPMI), a manufacturer of bicycle parts, but only two were produced. In 2008 the chair was rediscovered when one of the originals was donated to the Central Museum of Utrecht. Following this, Victor Veldhuijzen van Zanten produced a limited edition of the chair in 2013.
❤️❤️❤️

Orfeo (2018) by @cristinacelestino for Attico Design with special coloured antique effect by @antiquemirrorit

🇮🇹 This month, we’re exploring #IconicDesign by renowned Italian designers and brands. Make sure to leave a comment with the name of your favourite iconic Italian design piece and follow @IMADE_design to enter for a chance to win tickets to #IMADElondon in September.

The Orfeo mirror by Cristina Celestino for Attico Design was created in collaboration with Antique Mirror, an Italian company that harnesses patented techniques to produce antique mirror finishings. Here, the coloured antique finish on the Orfeo transforms the mirror from functional to decorative.

“Alvin Lustig designed numerous book covers for @ndpublishing over the course of his prolific career, including several for Tennessee Williams’s plays,” writes @artwinewhimsy in the post “A Teetering Trio in a Pastel Void” on our Object of the Day blog. “Lustig’s modernist designs, characterized by their dramatic simplicity, contrast with the voluptuous poetry and unapologetic melodrama of Williams’s writing. For this cover for A Streetcar Named Desire, Lustig choreographed a three-way dance between stick figures. Their limbs curve with balletic grace, then snap into modernist rigidity, evoking the tension between the play’s three principal characters.” More at the Object of the Day link in bio. #TennesseeWilliams #GraphicDesign #BookCover #DesignHistory

We are so excited about our first-ever Decor Tours Portugal adventure, Sept. 29- Oct 6!

1948. One of the things I enjoy most about the wildflower guides, besides the illustrations, are that often names of plants are different depending on publication time period and geography. • Thanks, Mom. • #wildflowers #wildflowerillustration #flowers #floral #flora #fleurs #botanical #botanicalillustration #1948 #bookcoverdesign #designhistory #natureguide #wildfloweridentification #doubledaybooks #bookfiend

Ok, my collection is getting silly, but I couldn’t pass this banner up! That pattern is 🔥. I’m going to have to open a design production museum similar to Frank Romano’s @museumofprinting soon. (That’s Biggie and Maeby, btw)

🖤An iconic and insanely sexy early 1970s jumpsuit from the one and only Giorgio di Sant Angelo-would you just look at those braided straps? Jumpsuit comes with original matching NOS duster jacket with pointed wizard sleeves. 🖤 In true Sant Angelo fashion, there are no zippers, buttons or snaps, just a single hook and eye on the straps behind the neck. #giorgiosantangelo #giorgiodisantangelo #fashionhistory #designervintage #1970sfashion

Lovely photoshoot with #AstonMartin today at the David Mellor cutlery factory … but Claude the Mellor cat seemed to think he was the star.
.
We discovered a brilliant connection with fellow British brand Aston Martin: Their Chief Designer Marek Reichman grew up in #Sheffield. As a child he’d regularly ride his bike to David Mellor’s Broom Hall workshop to peer through the windows and watch the process of cutlery design, development and production. Marek sites David Mellor as a key design inspiration. A great story linking two historic British brands!

It’s official. The Wood house no longer has a carport. It does however have a motoport. The Mr. has come home with a beautiful ‘75 BMW R90S, and I am not mad at that at all, for two reasons. It IS his birthday month and this bike truly represents two things I love. History and design. This moto is the result of a very brave decision by BMW. The goal: Superbike performance combined with devilishly good looks. For the first time they looked to combine engineering with good design. Enter Hans A. Muth. Muth drafted beautiful shapes for the tank, fairing, seat and tailpiece. Also (and probably my favourite element) a very thoughtful paint scheme “Silver Smoke” which misted silver into black. Black was Muth’s nod to BMW’s past, silver would represent its future. The hand painted golden striping spectacularly completes this vision. So, Happy Birthday month to the Mr. and Happy Father’s day to all of you Dads out there!

Last week we shared some unrealized designs by Unimark International for McDonald's restaurants and it garnered quite the attention!
.
.
Here's a look at a few more of Unimark's prototypes. Their designs caused mixed reactions: some of you loved it, some not so much. .
.
Here's your chance to see what the designers at Unimark saw when they created these designs. Scroll though the images to see their vintage snapshots of an actual McDonald's restaurant and packaging from 1973. .
.
In Unimark's notes for their presentation to McDonald's only one word was in all caps "STANDARDIZATION."
.
.
More from their notes: They considered "you deserve a break today" to be an excellent slogan, but suggested that McDonald's remove the number of hamburgers sold from their signs. "Number has become so large that it is meaningless." .
