The Smith Machine is very underrated💯 ⠀
When your starting a new training program or wanting to incorporate new compound exercises into your routine, the smith machine can be a useful tool before stepping out and doing the exercise with free weights.👍 ⠀
If your nervous to add some extra weight onto your squat or bench even, give it a shot on the smith machine before hand, just in case if you do find your body failing earlier than expected its easier to stop the movement and prevent yourself from injury. ⠀

6 LOWER BODY GYM BASICS.

With such a vast array of gym exercises to choose from, it can be daunting to know where to begin! Most of the women I work with, want to improve their lower body. This is where we are physiologically predisposed to storing fat, in order to access energy during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is why, in the leanest of women, some fat stores remain around the hips, glutes and thighs. Quite simply Ladies, this is how we are designed!

However, we can still build beautifully strong lower bodies and minimize fat stores in this area, and strength training is a great way to do that.

Here are 6 Lower Body Gym Basics to get you started;

1️⃣ Leg Press.
2️⃣ Seated Leg Curl.
3️⃣ Heels Elevated Plate/Goblet Squat (you can perform this with a Kettlebell).
4️⃣ Barbell/Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift (you can perform this with Dumbbells).
5️⃣ Leg Extension.
6️⃣ Lying Leg Curl.

Most gyms feature this equipment making the exercises highly accessible.

I recommend starting with 3 sets of 10-12 reps. To select the appropriate load, aim to be struggle to complete the last one or two reps in each set. When this begins to feel comfortable, add more weight. You can also increase to 4 sets as you progress.

Do you listen to your corner?? It is so important to listen to your corner during & in between rounds for that 3rd person perspective. We tend to over think the situation or no not see the things that your corner sees. Sometimes your corner will call something out and you hesitate because you feel like your opponent heard it too.

When we call something out for you to do, it is for a reason.your opponent gives the reactions that we need for you to land or execute what we call. The longer you hesitate, the more opportunity it gives your opponent to change their reaction.

When you come back to the corner between rounds,this is the time to really listen and trust in your corner as the game plan may need to change or we need you to adjust what your doing for the next round.

Get to know your autonomic nervous system ✔️

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a division of the peripheral nervous system that acts as a control system to regulate bodily functions such as heart rate, breathing rate, pupillary dilation, sexual arousal etc. It influences the function of the internal body and its organs.
🧠
It is largely unconscious to our awareness, and functions in the background to keep everything running smoothly. That being said, autonomic function can be perceived and improved control can be gained over it.
❌ The problem comes when the autonomic nervous system works against us, without us being aware of it.
🔑 There are two branches of the ANS:
• Sympathetic branch: This is considered the ‘fight or flight’ division of the ANS. It serves to ramp the body up, increase heart rate, dilate pupils, increase breathing rate, dampen digestive function etc. It physiologically prepares the body for stressful situations.
• Parasympathetic branch: This is considered the ‘rest and digest’ branch. It acts to decrease heart rate, improve digestive function, and get the body into a more relaxed and pro-recovery state.
✅ Getting to know your ANS starts with being more mindful of the state you are in throughout the day. Perceiving changes in breathing, heart rate, level of arousal or anxiety.
• Many people tend to be sympathetic dominant in today’s face paced/stressful culture. Knowing this can allow someone to prioritize sympathetic down-regulation strategies and parasympathetic up regulation.
↪️ Breathing is a great way to tap into the ANS and help shift it closer to the state you are wanting to achieve. It all starts with FEEL and PERCEPTION. Noticing your state starts to get easier when ATTENTION is paid to it.

Get to know your autonomic nervous system ✔️

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a division of the peripheral nervous system that acts as a control system to regulate bodily functions such as heart rate, breathing rate, pupillary dilation, sexual arousal etc. It influences the function of the internal body and its organs.
🧠
It is largely unconscious to our awareness, and functions in the background to keep everything running smoothly. That being said, autonomic function can be perceived and improved control can be gained over it.
❌ The problem comes when the autonomic nervous system works against us, without us being aware of it.
🔑 There are two branches of the ANS:
• Sympathetic branch: This is considered the ‘fight or flight’ division of the ANS. It serves to ramp the body up, increase heart rate, dilate pupils, increase breathing rate, dampen digestive function etc. It physiologically prepares the body for stressful situations.
• Parasympathetic branch: This is considered the ‘rest and digest’ branch. It acts to decrease heart rate, improve digestive function, and get the body into a more relaxed and pro-recovery state.
✅ Getting to know your ANS starts with being more mindful of the state you are in throughout the day. Perceiving changes in breathing, heart rate, level of arousal or anxiety.
• Many people tend to be sympathetic dominant in today’s face paced/stressful culture. Knowing this can allow someone to prioritize sympathetic down-regulation strategies and parasympathetic up regulation.
↪️ Breathing is a great way to tap into the ANS and help shift it closer to the state you are wanting to achieve. It all starts with FEEL and PERCEPTION. Noticing your state starts to get easier when ATTENTION is paid to it.

Three of my favourite unilateral exercises to give BJJ athletes to bulletproof their body for the mats.

This upper body push/ pull and lower body exercise offer the most bang for your buck in a time efficient manner. 
If your looking for something different try this:
Every 4 Mins for 20 Mins:
Landmine Press 8 reps each side
Seated Rope Climb (height dependent on ability) 3 reps
Goblet Cossack squats 8 each side

The Hip flexor stretch is also great after a decent espescially when playing with your back on the mat.

How to get started with gym? 🤔

1️⃣ KNOW THE BASICS - Do your research on google or YouTube of the basic exercises for each muscle group. Take note of the technique demonstrated in the video/photo, how many reps & sets for each exercises. I’d suggest choosing at least 2-3 basic exercises for each muscle group and keep it simple, practice the proper technique of the exercise you wish to do.

2️⃣ SET A SCHEDULE - For a beginner setting a small goal will go a long way! For example: plan a schedule for yourself to train at least twice a week to start with. Training at the gym shouldn’t take you 3 hours (unless you’re an high class athlete) so pick a good time of the day when you’re free and aim for 35-45 minutes a session.

3️⃣ FIND A GYM PARTNER - Having the right gym buddy is crucial! Most of us have that one friend who has crazy passion for the gym so hit him/her up for a session! Training with someone can make the gym 10x more enjoyable and having the right training partner is an equivalent to having a PT. A good partner would always; motivate you, correct your form, push you and help you to become the best version of yourself! .
These are my personal top 3 tips of how to get started with the gym for beginners 👍🏼 Good luck people and training hard 💪🏼

How to get started with gym? 🤔

As boring as they are don’t neglect them! ☝🏼 After my injury I put a lot more focus on overall composition, working on specific areas of the body to compliment my training. As a result old injuries have healed and I haven’t had any niggles since 🤞🏽 So as I said get em done.

Comrades. Часть 3 (заключительная)

Кажется прошло уже достаточно времени, чтобы я смогла спокойно написать вам про Comrades то, что писать было сначала очень сложно.

Для меня это оказался непростым опытом и это далеко не из-за дистанции. Работа была проделана колоссальная. Но я сейчас не хочу искать причинно-следственные связи. Тут скорее про ощущения.

С самого первого километра всё было не так. В первую очередь по физическим показателям - я знала как я могу себя чувствовать, могла представить свое состояние, но все обернулось как в самом страшном сне про очень плохую длительную.

Был бы это полумарафон или даже марафон, можно было бы просто сойти. Приберечь силы на потом. Но Comrades такого не допускает. Деваться уже некуда, придется добежать. Философия такая: back to back, начатое надо заканчивать.

И знаете, бежать в таком случае значительно сложнее, чем даже делать это, пусть и значительно быстрее, но на свой лучший результат. Мне до сих пор вспоминать немного страшно. Я просто слишком сильно люблю бег, а тут даже большая светлая любовь еле помогала держаться.

Такие забеги оставляют серьезный след.  Если конечно к ним правильно относиться и правильно переживать этот опыт. Чтобы становиться сильнее со своей протоптанной дорожки надо иногда сходить, выходить из комфортной зоны.

Для меня этот забег был видимо не про медаль и не про скорость. Но он был все еще про меня, этого у меня не отобрать. Моя жизнь выходит далеко за рамки бега и Comrades дал то, что мне было тогда нужно - хорошую почву для самоанализа. Мне тоже есть чему поучиться, это точно.
